We wanted to share with you my thoughts and observations from the recent Salone del Mobile Milano Euroluce exhibition 2023. Specifically, I was impressed by the following:
1. Innovation: There were several innovative lighting products on display, including the Artemide soft track lighting series that can be deformed and hung within a certain range, colorful silicone flat wires that can be DIY arranged and pulled for hanging lights, and the VIBIA weaving band piercing DIY suspension series. The SIMES IP System also stood out as a unique product.
2. Cross-disciplinary integration: Many of the products on display could be used for home, office, outdoor, and decorative lighting purposes. Some of the products included chandeliers, wall lights, table lamps, floor lamps, commercial lighting, office lighting, outdoor lighting, outdoor courtyard lights, and furniture. Brands such as Flos, SIMES, and VIBIA showcased a variety of products that crossed different sectors.
3. Scene-based: Exhibitors demonstrated the application of their lighting products in various settings, offering customers a realistic experience of the light effect, atmosphere, and scene.
4. LED modernism: LED lighting was widely used in the products on display, which mainly featured a modern design style.
5. Focus on materials: Many exhibitors showcased products made of specific materials, such as glass, translucent marble, plastic rattan, plastic sheets, ceramics, and wood veneer. The primary material used was glass, accounting for around 80% of the exhibits. Copper and aluminum were used as connection and heat dissipation materials, and some products featured slim or exaggerated designs with bright and high transparency.
6. Persistence: Many well-known brands exhibited their latest products, constantly iterating and improving upon their designs. However, some traditional manufacturers have remained dedicated to producing their original products for several decades, such as flower and plant lamps, and all-copper lamps.
7. The power of branding: Each exhibitor paid great attention to their brand image, which was demonstrated through their booth design, logo engraving on products, and the brand style of their products.
Overall, I believe that there are valuable lessons to be learned from the Milan design philosophy, and I encourage our KAVA designers and clients to continue to innovate and push the boundaries of what is possible. By doing so, we can create products that not only exceed customer expectations but are also well-received in the market.
